These basic steps and precautions should always be taken while traveling, regardless of your mode of travel:

  • Carry all reservation and confirmation numbers.
  • Carry your airline or cruise ship line’s customer service numbers.
  • Make sure you have your passport and other relevant identification with you prior to leaving.
  • Your passport should be valid for at least six months after your expected return date.

Baggage and luggage – limitations, liabilities, claims, and insurance

  • Be aware of size and weight limits, and how many bags are permitted for carry-on. Carry-on limits vary among airlines.
  • Find out limits on liability for lost luggage, and purchase additional insurance when necessary.
  • When filing claims for lost luggage, be sure to fill out all the necessary forms correctly, get names and identification numbers of people you speak with, and determine necessary follow up steps, who you need to follow up with, and their contact information.
